NICE AREA

The eastern Côte d’Azur combines the energy of the Riviera coastline with a slower, more residential side of southern France. The atmosphere shifts gradually between lively seaside cities, elegant harbour towns and quiet hill villages surrounded by olive trees and Mediterranean vegetation.

At the heart of the region lies Nice, the cultural and economic centre of the French Riviera. Life here moves between the sea and the city streets. In the morning, locals gather at cafés and markets in Vieux Nice, while the Promenade des Anglais remains active throughout the day with walkers, cyclists and beachgoers. The city combines grand Belle Époque façades with a more relaxed Mediterranean rhythm, particularly in neighbourhoods such as Le Port, Libération and Cimiez. Nice also has a strong local identity, shaped by Italian influences, food culture and a year-round outdoor lifestyle. Despite its international reputation, many parts of the city still feel distinctly local and lived-in.

Just east of the city, Villefranche-sur-Mer has a softer and more intimate atmosphere. Built around its deep natural harbour, the town is known for its colourful waterfront buildings, narrow stairways and small squares overlooking the bay. Fishing boats and yachts share the harbour, while restaurants and cafés remain centred around the water rather than large boulevards or shopping streets. The pace here is calmer, particularly outside the summer season.

To the west of Nice, Cagnes-sur-Mer offers a more varied character, combining beaches, local neighbourhoods and the historic hilltop village of Haut-de-Cagnes. The town has long attracted artists and residents looking for a less polished and more everyday Riviera atmosphere. Nearby, Saint-Laurent-du-Var is more contemporary in feel, with its marina, waterfront restaurants and direct connections to Nice and the airport. It functions as both a residential town and a practical base along the coast.

Between Nice and Antibes, Villeneuve-Loubet balances seaside living with green surroundings. Around the marina, the atmosphere is modern and relaxed, while the older village areas inland retain a quieter Provençal character. The nearby parks, rivers and walking routes give the town a more open and spacious feeling compared to some of the denser coastal centres.

Further inland, Tourrette-Levens reflects a different side of the Côte d’Azur altogether. Surrounded by hills and forests, village life here feels slower and more connected to the landscape. Small streets, stone houses and local cafés replace the busy waterfront atmosphere of the coast, while Nice remains within relatively easy reach.
